Who Is a Christian?

You are NOT a Christian :-

1. If you are born into a Christian family or in a Christian Country.

2. If you read your Bible.

3. If you do goods works in Jesus or Gods name.

4. If you go to Church does not make you a Christian.

5. If you call yourself a Christian does not make you one.

6. If you believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob does not make you a Christian.

So what is a Christian? A couple of billion people on the planet all claim to be Christians, but their beliefs, doctrines and practices vary widely. What does being a Christian mean? Let’s take a quick look at what the Bible says is a Christian.

The word Christian is used three times in the New Testament

Acts 11:26-28 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

1 Peter:4:16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. Followers of Jesus Christ were first called “Christians” in Antioch.

At the time that believers got the appellation Christians, it was common for the Greeks to give satirical nicknames to particular groups. So those loyal to the Roman General Pompey were dubbed “Pompeians,” and the followers of General Sulla were called “Sullanians.” Those who publicly and enthusiastically praised the emperor Nero Augustus received the name Augustinians, meaning “of the party of Augustus.” To the Greeks, it was all a fun word game and a verbally dismissive gesture. Then a new group cropped up in Antioch; since they were characterized by behaviour and speech centred on Christ, the Greeks called them “Christians,” or “those of the party of Christ.”

While the first-century Christians did follow the teachings, practices and example of Jesus Christ at that time, since then the term has virtually lost its meaning—as it’s usually not accompanied by the same way of life and understanding. Today many claim to be Christians yet don’t follow Jesus’ teachings.

There is only one way to become a Christian and that is to accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour and confess this with your mouth and believe in your heart. The only sin which will get you into Hell is not believing in the Lord Jesus Christ.

The following download is of a little eBook by Torben Sondergaard of The Last Reformation movement who has written about his experience of being in a Church and not being a biblical Christian. It is recommended to read this little book.
