A New Covenant Mindset versus An Old Covenant Mindset

Hebrews 1:1-3  God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,  Old Covenant

2  has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; New Covenant

3  who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

Notice several things about these scriptures

First Question:- who did God speak to through the prophets?

Answer: The fathers, (the patriarchs).

Second Question:-  who did God speak to through His Son in the last days? Answer: Us.

How do we know that God is still speaking to us through His Son?

Answer: Because it is still the Last days.

So where does that put the Old Testament in relation to us?

The Bible says that all Scripture is given by God and is inspired or “God-breathed”. It also says that all Scripture is given for our benefit, so that we might be taught, reproved, and instructed, so that we might be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16  All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,

Old  Testament  Scriptures  must  be  viewed  through  the  filter  of  New  Testament  reality.

It  also  says  that  Jesus  is  the  express  image  of  his  (God’s)  person.  The  Greek  word  for  “express  image”  is  a  word  that  is  familiar  to  us  in  English.  It  is  the  word  “character”  and  means  that  Jesus  is  the  perfect  reflection  of  God’s  character.  Jesus  perfectly  reflected  God’s  character  to  us.

The  Old  Testament  did  not  reflect  God’s  character,  but  it  did  reflect  the  justice  and  holiness  of  God.  God  had  to  deal  with  man  based  upon  how  a  just  and  holy  God  had  to  deal  with  fallen  man  whose  sins  were  not  dealt  with.  Man  was  allowed  a  connection  with  God  by  having  his  sins  atoned  (covered).  But  God  could  not  deal  with  sinful  man  the  way  He  wanted  to  because  man’s  sins  separated  him  from  God.

However in the New Covenant (Testament), God was able, through Jesus, to treat man like He wanted to. Example: A policeman will arrest a criminal and treat him like a criminal, but once the person is cleared of the accusation or if they serve their time, the policeman must treat the person like any other citizen. God had to treat men like the sinners they were, but when Jesus came, He could treat them like they were innocent because Jesus was there to bear the penalty for their sins.

Hebrews 8:6  But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.

We must settle God’s Word on earth by believing in it, standing on it, and doing it. A “Will” reveals the nature and intentions of the person who wrote it. The Sovereignty of God is not the fickleness of God. The Sovereignty of God does not mean that He has the right to pick and choose to whom He will keep His word. If that were true, we could never pray the prayer of faith as commanded in James 5:14-16. You cannot have faith any further than your knowledge of the will of God.

The Evidence of an old Covenant Mindset:

  1. An Old Covenant Mindset is always looking for God to speak to them through another person. In the Old Testament it was usually the Prophet that spoke for God.
  2. An Old Covenant mindset will always be trying to earn or deserve God’s blessings rather than believe that everything we get from God, we get by grace.

Important

The OLD COVENANT mindset will emphatically state that everything is by grace, but their actions will prove that they believe that everything is by works.

An OLD COVENANT mindset will always be afraid that God is either mad at them for something or will get mad at them if they mess up in any little thing.

Therefore, they are always afraid to try anything. They are always afraid to do anything without an express leading to do so. Most preaching has been from an OLD COVENANT mindset, so the normal teaching from the pulpit is: Don’t do anything without permission or you will get into trouble.

Many times, the permission referred to is from the leadership rather than from God. Insecure people feel a need to be controlled. Ministers want to control when they should be equipping and releasing for service.

Most People are waiting for a Phone Call from God when He has already sent them letters and books collected together into the Bible. This is God will made clear for us all. We do not need a leading or a special word of knowledge.

Most people seem to be waiting on God to tell them specifically what to do and when to do it, rather than realizing that God has already told us what to do and given us examples of how to do it. The employee of least value to a company is the one that must be told everything to do. The most valuable employee is the one that finds what needs to be done and does it without being told. Any specifics we may need will be given AS WE GO, and not UNTIL we go. God works according to the principles of good management, He tells you what to do and gives you the parameters within which you must work, but then He leaves the how to, up to you.

Which is what I have experienced in the last couple of months. There has been 4 new believers which have each needed different teaching and ministry. One needed deliverance but there are no instructions on how to cast out demons except to command them to go as Jesus did. Or even to know if there is a demon. You are led by the Holy Spirit as you do the work of ministry.

So we all need to have a New Covenant Mindset. The way we do this is by reading and mulling over all the precious promises in the New Testament. Amen!

Let us start  doing the Great Commission and let God supply what you need when you need it.
