Prayer Cloths and the Holy Spirit

Have you ever heard of prayer cloths? Many ministries in the past used them some with good success.

Below is an explanation of the principle of why prayer cloths work and testimonies about them being used. Also how you can use other objects to impart power in order to heal and set people free.

In Acts 19:11, we are going to look at the effects of being Spirit filled.

11 Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul:

Why would they call it “special miracles?”  Well, because it was unusual.  Why did He do that through Paul?  Paul said, “I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than you all (Corinthians 14:18)” Do you think there might be some correlation?  In other words, it is not that God said, “Paul, you are special; do this.”  Paul said, “I am doing this,” and because of that, he rose to where God said, “Oh, I see you.”  Do you see the difference there?  It was not a matter of God dumping something on Paul.

Paul spoke in tongues more than all the Corinthian church saints he states in 1 Corinthians. So he was charged up as I say and God worked miracles through him. We have the life of God in us. Do you believe that? When you lay your hands on the sick, it is the power of the Holy Spirit that moves from your body through the hands to the person. That power continues to work even after you take your hands away. That is why people see the healing if your keep your faith switched on and expecting to hear a good report.

“God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul.”

Acts 19:12 tells us about some of them:

So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

Paul had aprons; he had handkerchiefs.  People would come and say, “I have a sick loved one.  I have a person who is demon possessed who is a loved one.  Can you help?”  Notice what Paul did.  He said, “Yes.  Here, take this handkerchief,” or “Here, take this apron.”  He passed these things out, and they took them back to the sick.  The handkerchief or apron was placed on or near the person and it caused the sickness to leave.  It caused demons to leave.

If someone says, “I do not know how to cast out a demon.”  Don’t worry about it.  Just take a handkerchief and give it to them.  Give it to a loved one.  These are handkerchiefs, not prayer cloths.  There is no mention of prayer, so they are not prayer cloths.  They are spiritual batteries.  Get this: they were taken from Paul’s body.

I am trying to break you out of religious mindsets which we tend to get into and put God in a box.  What if Jesus went into a department store and saw a robe and said, “Oh, I like this robe.  I think I will try that one on.”  In a dressing room, He would take His robe off, and hang it on the hook.  He would take the new robe, put it on, and say, “Yes, I like this.”  He would walk out and ask, “Can I wear this out?  I will pay for it, but can I wear it out?  I don’t want the old robe anymore.  I want the new one.”

What would happen to a sick person if he or she walked into that dressing room and picked up that robe?  He or she would be healed.  Why?  It would be the same thing that happened with Paul.  All Paul did was take a handkerchief, or an apron, or a shirt off, give it to them, and say, “Here, take this.”  They took it, and they put it near the sick person, and the Spirit of God, the Spirit of life dwelling in Paul repelled sickness and disease.  Why?  Life and death are opposite.

You might think this is nonsense, well do you remember the lady saying in her heart that if I touch the hem of His (Jesus) garment I will be made well.

First, you must remember this: Jesus was a Spirit filled person. Would you agree? Believe it or not, there might be some people who would argue with you on that, but we firmly believe Jesus was Spirit filled. We want to look at some things here: some of the benefits of being Spirit filled—what happens to you and what should be the norm when you are Spirit filled. Turn first to In Mark 5:25-28:-

25 Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years,

26  and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse.

27  When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment.

28  For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.”

Notice her words here: “If I may…” She said, “If I may touch but His clothes,” then she says, “I shall be made whole.”

The first part says, “If,” but in the last part, there is no “if.” The last part says, “I shall be made whole.” It was not a matter of where the power was. She knew where the power was. Her whole key was, “If I can get to it, I can get it.” “If I may touch but His clothes, I shall be whole.”

Mark 5:29  Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction.

30  And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?”

Notice that it happened instantly. That is what we want. We always push for the instant. I always tell everybody, “We will take it any way we can get it.” If it takes a while to get someone healed, we will take that; we do not like it, though. That is why we keep pushing. We believe for the instant, but once we attach our faith to a person and to that situation, we do not let go until it is done. That is the key.

A lot of people have problems with that. (This is parenthetical here.) They say, “Well, you know Jesus’ healings were all instant.” Technically they were not, but they happened fairly quickly. Most of

them were within a day or within the time they left. About the one boy it was said, “He began to amend from that hour,” so he was getting better from that time; he was recovering. All of Jesus’ healings were not instant, but people did not stand around believing for 10 or 20 years, so in that case, we would say it happened quickly.

The main thing here is if you look at healing as being instant, it is always good, and we always want that.

“And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that virtue had gone out of Him, turned Him about in the press, and said, ‘Who touched My clothes?’” He knew someone had touched His clothes. Go back to the first part of the verse. First, “He knew in Himself,” He had a knowing, “that virtue had gone out of Him.”

Where did the power come from that healed the woman? It came out of Jesus. It did not fall or come from heaven directly.

Acts 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;

Notice it says how the Spirit will pour out of you. “He poured out of His Spirit upon all flesh.” It did not say He poured out His Spirit. He poured out of His Spirit. His Spirit is dwelling in men. His Spirit doesn’t fall upon people in the sense of power to heal. This might sound pedantic but that is how the scripture reads and it is confirmed by Mark 5:29-30 and Acts 19:12. It is what we also experience when we command healing with faith in the name of Jesus using our hands when laid on someone. That is why this is the most powerful form of prayer to heal.

Firstly, we do not find in the Bible that we are to pray for God to heal someone. When we minister to a person, the power to heal doesn’t fall from heaven to them. It comes out of us. We are the conduit through which God works. However, our thought process definitely should not be, “We are not going to pray; let us just see what God does.” No, we are going to fulfill the commission of God. We are going to do what He said to do. Then He will pour through us and accomplish what He said He would do. The key here is that it is not going to fall, but instead it is going to pour out of us.

If you were in a room with 200 people and each of them were sick, then as you ministered, it would be harder for you to pray for 200 people one by one. We have done that; we have prayed for well over 1,500 people in one session. If you pray for the whole group, His Spirit will not fall like rain upon them. His Spirit pours out of you and disburses into 200 different directions. That is what you must grasp.

What I am trying to get across to you today is the benefit of being Spirit filled. It is not the benefit of having knowledge of the Spirit. It is being Spirit filled and when you are, you can release the Spirit.

One of the things I love about John Lake is that he was very scientific minded, and he explained a lot of things scientifically in line with the

Spirit. He used scientific terms to talk about things of the Spirit. That is one of the reasons I am so excited about the current level of science discussions: we talk about quantum physics because, for the first time, we actually have a language in science that can describe the things of the Spirit and how they work.

Have you ever tried to put two magnets together?  On one side they stick.  You go to the other side and you can’t make them touch.  That is exactly the way it is between life and death.  Life and death can’t touch.  Because of the Spirit of life in you, emanating from you, coming forth out of you, people ought to be able to touch your clothes and get healed as we have demonstrated is what happened in the bible.

I have several testimonies/examples :-

Number 1:  In South Africa, John G. Lake and a preaching partner of his were tired; they were looking for a place to rest.  They were going over this mountaintop and saw this little village and said, “Let us go down and get something to eat and drink, and we will relax a little while.”

They went down, and the people heard and said, “John G. Lake and his partner are here.  Quickly, get everybody who is sick together!”  Within a matter of minutes, hundreds of people started pouring in.

While they were there, they said, “We are not going to get any rest here.”  They were trying to take a break, but they said, “We can’t leave these people sick.”  They couldn’t say no, so they went out to the middle of the village to this post that was used to make sacrifices.  (It was the thing they used to tie the animal to when they were preparing to have a feast.)

John Lake said, “Here is what we will do.”  He went out and put his hand on this post.  He purposely, consciously, released the Spirit of God.  He stepped back and said, “All right, we are going to leave because we need rest, but anybody who comes and touches this post will get healed.”  Then they left.  Reports went out about that and for the next several weeks, people were lined up from all over the area.  They said there were reports that as many as 70,000 people walked by and touched that post and were healed.

People say, “I just don’t believe you can leave something like that.”  Really?  Have any of you heard of a team called CSI?  You put your hand on something, and they can tell if you were there or not.  Why?  You leave DNA.  Well, you have the divine nature of God in you.  You have “Divine Nature Attributes.”  The DNA of God is in you, and wherever you lay your hand, the Spirit stays on whatever you touch.

There is a chemical called “luminol” that is used to spray an area to detect the presence of blood.  They can tell if there is blood when a black light is shined onto that spot, and it lights up a certain colour.  Well, I can tell you, “If the Spirit of God lives in you, wherever you put your hand and then remove it, the Spirit of God and the DNA of God in you has been placed upon that thing.”  I want you to understand what you have in you.  You have the Spirit of the living God in you.  You are a Spirit filled person, and because of that, you have something that emanates from you.

Number 2:  Years ago, we were helping to start an Assembly of God church up in Sherman, Texas.  It was a little storefront church, and we went in to put up the chairs.  That night we were going to institute the board of elders.  I got there a little early and went around and started laying hands on the chairs and praying.  The elders were going to be there, but I didn’t know who was going to be sitting in which chair.  I just knew that they were the chairs for the elders

There were seven chairs across the front.  I started laying hands and praying, “God the person that sits in this chair, by Your Spirit, release Your Spirit into them.  Let them be fully, faithful men of God that are going to lead this congregation.”  I did that with every chair.

That night we went into the service, and when we called the elders up, they came and sat down.  I wasn’t one of the elders in that church; I was just one of the guys who went there and was helping out.  We had these seven people sitting down in those chairs.  Within five minutes of their sitting, one by one, they fell out of their chairs onto the floor and started praying.  We did not even get to have a service the way we had planned, but it went the way God had planned.

These men started praying, repenting, and confessing sins.  This was the most unusual induction service I had ever seen at a church service.  While they were confessing, we were wondering if they should really be elders or not.  We weren’t sure until they were done, but by that time, they were clean.  It was just the laying on of hands.

I can give you other stories of situations like that.

Number 3:  We took a cloth to a woman who was up in Springfield, Missouri.  She had been diagnosed with cancer.  We gave her the cloth; she wore it; and she was totally healed of cancer.  Then she started passing it to her friends.  It was not meant for them.  I did not pray for them.  I did not even pray for her, technically.  I just laid my hands on the cloth and commanded, “Life,” into this cloth and said, “Wherever this cloth goes, sickness will depart and demons will leave.”  Then we gave it to her.  She was healed; she started passing it to her friends.  She had a cancer support group.  One by one, all of her friends who wore the cloth got healed.

The last time I saw her, we were sitting at a restaurant in Springfield,

Missouri across the street from the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary.  She said, “I have this; here is the cloth.  I do not know if you want it back or not.”  I said, “Well, no, I don’t need it.”  She said, “Do I need to send this in and get it recharged?”  I said, “I don’t know.  I’ll tell you what: if you ever find out that it quits working, send it back in, and we will send you another one.”  She was giving it to people we didn’t pray for, and it was working.  Why?  It is the “life.”

God is so much bigger than we give Him credit for.  He is so much more powerful.  He has so much more love.  He is so much more willing to do, but it is usually our theological barriers that we put up that keep Him from being who He wants to be.

Number 4:  We were in Toms River, New Jersey.  I was doing a service there and at the end, a man came to me with a bandana-type handkerchief.  He said, “I am going to go and visit my father.  He has Alzheimer’s.  He is in a nursing home.  Would you pray over this?”  We took it and said, “In the name of Jesus, we command ‘life’ into this cloth.  We command sickness and disease to go, in the name of Jesus.”

He, his wife, and their kids went and visited this man’s father every Sunday.  They put the handkerchief around his neck.  This man had total dementia from Alzheimer’s.  They said that he had never responded at all.  While he was sitting there he suddenly started shaking to the point where he was scared.  He was in a wheelchair, and he started sliding around in this wheelchair.  Suddenly, he looked up and said, “Jesus!  What do You want?”  He was looking and saw Jesus, and they were looking trying to see Jesus, too.  They said, “We didn’t see anything.”

He said, “Alright,” and he leaned his head forward and then apparently, Jesus touched him.  The next thing this man did was look at them, and then he started talking to them.  The Alzheimer’s was completely gone in less than 30 seconds.  Why?  Life had gone into him and had driven that out.

Number 5:  Years ago I was on the road, and my wife was at home.  A lady from Florida called and wanted a cloth for her father who was in a nursing home.  My wife was looking for prayer cloths because we had prayed over a bunch of them at one time and left them for people, but she could not find one.

She called me and said, “Where are they?”  I said, “I don’t know; if you don’t find them, then we don’t have any.”  She said, “Okay,” so she went to my closet and took out a perfectly good shirt, cut the sleeve off, and sent it in the mail.

When we got the request, it just said, “I need a prayer cloth for my father.”  That is all that was said; we didn’t know any other details.  My wife cut off the left sleeve of my shirt and sent it down there.  What we did not know at the time was that the reason she wanted a cloth was because her father in the nursing home had a withered left arm.  It just happened to be the left arm sleeve of my shirt that my wife had sent to them.

She didn’t know she was being led by the Spirit, but the Spirit of God knew and said, “Here.  Send that.”  This woman took this sleeve and put it up on her father’s arm.  He had on a T-shirt, and she pinned it to his T-shirt and left it on him.  She told the nurses that day, “Leave that on him.  Do not take it off.”  They thought she was crazy.  (They will think you’re crazy if you do things according to the Bible.)  She left that day, and the next morning when she walked in, they said, “Your father is waiting for you.”  When she walked into his room, he looked at her and started waving at her with his left arm.

Again, my wife didn’t know it.  I didn’t pray over my shirt.  It had been cleaned since I had worn it, so obviously the anointing can’t be washed out.  That is something even Tide can’t take out.

If you know me, you know I am not super spiritual, wispy, or living off in some weird world.  I live in another world, but I am able to talk with you and be normal.  I am not different.  I am not special.  The only thing that makes anybody special is the special One Who lives in them.  That is the only part of anybody that is special—it is Jesus.  He is the only One Who is special.  Amen?  That is Who lives in you.

Number 6:  A couple of years ago we got some stuffed animals, gathered them up, prayed over them, and then took them down to the Children’s Medical Centre.  Generally, you cannot just walk in, but if you walk down the halls, the doors are open, the kids are in there, and if you show them the stuffed animal, they are like, “Yeah, bring it in.”  It is kind of our doorway in, and many times we don’t get to pray for them.  We had prayed over the animals, and by holding these stuffed animals, the children started getting healings because once you give them a stuffed animal, they don’t let go of it.  They keep it close.

The above is an extract from a book called Concerning Tongues by Curry Blake. He has spent years understanding how God works and what works best for healing. He has hundreds of testimonies.

I am asking everyone to think outside the box when it comes to Father God.  He is so much bigger, and He wants to live through you by His Spirit. Jesus His son made all this possible.

So I hope you see that using cloths that have had hands laid on them is biblical and that they work because they are endued/saturated with the power of the Spirit. That is the life of God!

So why don’t try it and see what happens.

Blessings Raymond
